AABL Rules

The AABL have adopted a hybrid set of rules that incorporate aspects of FIBA, NBA and NCAA that promote a fast paced, physical brand of basketball allowing the game to flow and players to showcase their individual skills.

League rules are:

  • 4 x 10 Minute Quarters
    • Clock stops on every whistle
    • 1 minute quarter time, 2 minute half time, and 2 minute OT
  •  2 x Timeouts Per Half
  • 24 / 14 Second Shot Clock
  • Free Throw Rules
    • 7th foul in the half = “1 and 1” (must make the 1st FT, to shoot 2nd FT)
    • 10th foul in the half = Double bonus (2 free throws)
    • Foul out = 5 personal fouls
    • Technical Foul = 1 Free throw and possession
  • Jump Balls
    • The team that win the initial jump ball automatically gets possession to start the 3rd quarter
    • The team that loses the initial jump ball automatically gets possession to start the 2nd and 4th quarter
    • All other jump-ball situations are resolved as actual jump balls between the two players involved
  • Regulated Zone Defense
    • Man to man is preferred but zone is allowed
    • Defensive 3 seconds will be enforced and will result in one FT and possesion for the offensive team
